Describing a landscape in geography is a discipline, not an impression — examiners, field notebooks, and site reports all want the same thing: a systematic account of what the land is, how it lies, what shaped it, and how people use it, delivered in the subject’s own vocabulary. Where creative writing wants mood, geography wants relief, drainage, vegetation, and land use, in an order a reader can map. Students lose marks for adjectives and gain them for structure, evidence, and correct terms. Below are the techniques for describing a landscape in geography, each with examples you can study and adapt.

How to Describe a Landscape in Geography

#1. Start With Location and Extent

A geographic description opens by fixing the area — region, compass position, boundaries, rough scale, and relation to named features — because everything after depends on the reader knowing where and how much land is being described. Grid references and distances beat vague settings every time.

The study area lies on the eastern flank of the valley, covering roughly four square kilometers between the river’s floodplain in the west and the 320-meter ridge crest in the east.

The landscape extends northward from the coast road for about two kilometers, bounded by the estuary to the west and rising farmland to the east.

Viewed from the trig point at grid reference 682415, the area described runs from the immediate moorland plateau down to the settlement visible five kilometers south.

#2. Describe Relief — the Shape of the Land

Relief is the landscape’s skeleton — height above sea level, steepness, and form: flat floodplain, gently rolling lowland, steep-sided valley, plateau, scarp and dip — and geographic description names these forms with elevation evidence. “Hilly” is weak; “steeply sloping above the 200-meter contour” earns marks.

Land cover comes next — natural or semi-natural vegetation (woodland, moorland, grassland, wetland) and its distribution relative to relief and drainage — described in proportion and pattern rather than lists. #6. Explain Through Process — Say Why It Looks This Way

Higher-level geographic description links form to process — glaciation’s U-valleys and erratics, rivers’ meanders and terraces, coastal erosion’s stacks and bays, human drainage and quarrying — because geography asks why here as much as what. One process sentence per feature turns description into explanation, which is where the top marks live.

The isolated granite boulders scattered across the limestone pavement are erratics, carried and dumped by ice sheets, and they explain themselves to anyone who has seen the geology map.

The bay-and-headland coastline records differential erosion: the clays have retreated into wide bays while the resistant sandstone stands forward in cliffed headlands.

The level fields of the former fen are a made landscape — drained in the seventeenth century — and the land’s continuing shrinkage is visible where the roads now ride above the fields on low causeways.

#7. Use the Discipline’s Vocabulary — Precisely

Geographic description is graded on terminology — interlocking spurs, floodplain, water table, nucleated, scarp, tributary, contour — used correctly and unforced. The vocabulary compresses description (one term doing a sentence’s work) and signals competence; misused terms cost more than absent ones, so deploy only what you can defend.

In its upper course the river descends through interlocking spurs in a V-shaped valley; by the middle course it has begun to meander across a narrow floodplain — two terms carrying what would otherwise take a paragraph.

The contours crowd together at the scarp and spread wide across the vale — and a reader who knows contours has already seen the whole cross-section.

“The land goes up and down a lot” became “relief is strongly dissected, with local variation exceeding 100 meters,” and the same observation doubled its value.

#8. Keep Opinion Out — Evidence Over Adjectives

The geography register is observational — “attractive,” “stunning,” and “unspoiled” are marked down where “extensive,” “steep,” and “sparsely settled” are marked up — because the description must be verifiable from map, photo, or field. Save the aesthetics for the essay; in geography, the compliment is precision.

The draft called the coastline dramatic; the final version gave the cliff height (85 meters), the retreat rate (40 centimeters a year), and the drama took care of itself.

Not “a beautiful patchwork of fields” — a regular pattern of rectangular fields averaging eight hectares, bounded by hawthorn hedges with mature oak standards.

Describe it so a stranger could draw it, the examiner’s report said — that is the whole test, and adjectives don’t draw.

The geographic method is a checklist worn smooth by generations of field notebooks: locate it, shape it (relief), water it (drainage), clothe it (vegetation), people it (settlement and land use), then explain it through process, all in the discipline’s own terms and none of your adjectives. It’s the least romantic way to describe land and the most durable; a century-old geographic description can still be checked against the ground, which is exactly the point.
